Data, sources & methodology

Statistics with a date

Country land and surface area: World Bank / FAO, 2023. Population: World Bank, 2024. Natural Earth population estimates fill gaps, with their original year displayed. Missing statistics are excluded from matches and rankings.

States: U.S. Census Vintage 2024 estimates and 2024 Gazetteer land/water areas. Density = population ÷ land area. Earth’s land denominator is approximately 149 million km².

Boundaries & coverage

Natural Earth 1:10m Admin 0, simplified for rendering. States: U.S. Atlas 3.0.1, Census-derived 1:10m boundaries. All 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii, are available.

Joins use ISO alpha-3 / World Bank identifiers and state FIPS codes. Sovereign-parent codes on small dependencies are excluded; each statistical record is assigned to at most one mapped entity. Boundaries reflect source cartography, not a position on territorial disputes. Statistics and mapped territory may differ, especially for disputed or overseas areas.

A common physical scale

Each entity is centered in a local Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection on a sphere of radius 6,371.0088 km. Both SVG outlines use the same pixel-per-projected-kilometer scale. Neither silhouette is individually resized or corrected to match a reported land area.

MultiPolygons, holes and remote islands are retained; longitude wrapping handles the antimeridian. All components use their entity’s projection. Equal-area preserves relative physical area; long distances and shapes can distort, particularly across very wide territories. The scale bar represents projected kilometers.

Nearest matches minimize absolute difference. Percent differences use the selected place as the baseline. Percentiles count strictly smaller values. Data snapshot downloaded September 4, 2026. The release bundles its visualization libraries locally; all data is embedded in this file.
